General Update

Published on 3rd July 2024

Garden of Eden is a new charity established in September 2023 to meet the burial needs of the Muslim communities in Devon and Cornwall. According to the last census, there are just over 10, 000 residents who identify themselves as Muslim living in the peninsula. The Muslim population is growing and as the local communities become more diverse, they will present different needs. There is presently only a very modest provision of burial plots earmarked specifically for Muslims, not all local authorities in the region make a distinctive provision. Increasingly local authorities are meeting the demand arising for cremations rather than burials.

Many of the local planning authorities are busy progressing their local plans for determining and guiding the future development of land for at least the next 15 years. The long-term needs of the Muslim communities must be taken into account, but it also needs practical and timely provision of burial plots with essential facilities. The rural character of much of the region points to the need for a regional facility close to a population center with good access. The Garden of Eden charity aims to meet the needs and fulfill the requirements.

The first step is to secure suitable land. The initial objective is to secure a minimum of 10 acres site by 2025, at a cost of £1,500,000, with adjacent available land that can be sectioned off for acquisition in the future.

To raise the monies required for this land purchase, Garden of Eden will be fundraising within the local community, with mosques in the UK, and through digital platforms; as well as working with high-profile individuals to raise awareness for this project.
